UGC NET Exam Syllabus

The NTA has been entrusted by the University Grants Commission (UGC) with the task of conducting UGC-NET, which is a test to determine the eligibility of Indian nationals for ‘Assistant Professor’ and ‘Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor’ in Indian universities and colleges.

The UGC NET Syllabus 2024 is set by the University Grants Commission (UGC) for both the June and December exams. If there are any changes to the syllabus, the National Testing Agency (NTA) will issue a formal notification. The syllabus update is based on the New Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) and was announced by UGC chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar.

The UGC NET syllabus is divided into two parts:

  • Paper 1: This is common for all candidates and includes 50 multiple-choice questions (MCQs).
  • Paper 2: This varies by subject and includes 100 MCQs specific to the candidate’s chosen subject.

Both papers need to be completed within 3 hours.

Understanding the syllabus for both papers is the first step in preparing for the exam. Candidates should be familiar with the latest exam pattern and syllabus to prepare effectively. The UGC NET exam is conducted for 83 subjects to determine eligibility for Assistant Professor and/or Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) positions in Indian universities and colleges.

UGC to Revise Syllabus for NET

The UGC chairman announced on social media that the UGC NET 2024 syllabus will be updated soon. Candidates will have enough time to prepare before the new syllabus is implemented. The decision to update the syllabus was made on November 3, 2023, due to the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The new syllabus for all 83 subjects will be revised according to NEP 2020 guidelines.

The updated UGC NET 2024 syllabus will be available on the official website (ugcnet.nta.ac.in) once it is finalized and uploaded.
